7 Simple Rules to Make Your Cut Flowers Last Longer

Bringing a fresh bouquet into your home instantly elevates the space, adding vibrant colors and natural aromas. However, nothing is more disappointing than watching those lively blooms wilt after just a couple of days. With a few simple professional floristry habits, you can easily double the lifespan of your cut flowers and keep them looking fresh for up to two weeks.

  1. Start with a Sterile Vase: Bacteria is the primary enemy of cut flowers. Wash your vase thoroughly with warm soapy water before placing your stems inside.

  2. Master the Diagonal Cut: Always trim 1–2 inches off the stems at a 45-degree angle using a sharp knife or floral shears, never household scissors which crush the water vessels.

  3. Strip the Lower Foliage: Remove all leaves that fall below the waterline. Submerged foliage decays quickly, breeding harmful bacteria.

  4. Change Water Regularly: Replace the vase water every two days, taking this opportunity to re-trim the stems slightly.

  5. Feed Your Flowers: Use the provided flower food packet. It contains carbohydrate nutrients and bactericides that nourish the blooms and keep the water clear.

  6. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat: Keep your arrangements away from radiator units, direct sunlight, and drafty windows.

  7. Keep Away from Fruit Bowls: Ripening fruits, especially bananas and apples, release ethylene gas which drastically speeds up floral aging.
